Meet Max and Mia

Max and Mia, Year 5, debating stars

Max and Mia are twins who joined Year 5 at Headington Rye Prep this year. They recently relocated from Scotland, where they previously attended a private school.

Both are members of the School’s debating club and participate in on-site piano lessons. At the most recent Prep concert, they performed together as a musical duet.

On Headington Rye

Moving schools can be scary, but being able to attend the same school together gives us both an extra sense of support. Having my twin with me has made the transition from our last school much easier.

We have both felt so much friendship and help from the staff and the other children. Everyone has made us feel welcome and settled, and I have already made many new friends.

The teachers are also incredibly helpful. They always seem to know exactly when we are stuck in a lesson and are quick to provide the support we need.

On clubs and extra-curricular activities

Max – I really enjoy being part of the Debating Club, Drama Club and taking Piano lessons. Since my favourite subject is Maths, it is great to join clubs that allow me to use my voice and problem-solve in a different way away from the page.

Mia – Drama Club gives me the chance to express myself physically. Both my brother and I take piano lessons and I love it when we get to play together at school.

On their goals and ambitions

Max – My  favourite subject is Maths. I love the challenge of problem solving and finding the correct answer. When I grow up, I want to be a mathematician or a scientist. My big goal is to invent a teleportation device!

Mia – My favourite subject is English, I love expressing myself through words and storytelling. When I grow up, I would like to be a human rights lawyer. I am really inspired by Martin Luther King and want to use my voice to stand up for others.

On what they’ve learned about themselves

Max – I am much more confident at public speaking. I can project my voice clearly and present my ideas well to an audience. It feels great to be able to deliver a speech accurately and without feeling nervous.

Mia – I am much better at English than I first thought. I love being an author and coming up with my own stories. I was even given a Headteacher’s Award for my writing skills, especially for my creative ideas and the descriptive language I use.
